John Wilson

John Wilson, born August 25, 1926, died Saturday, January 23, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late Teresa Agnes (Audette) Wilson for 59 years.

Born in Scotland, he was the only child of Andrew Wilson and Isabelle “Kate” Blackburn Wilson.  He wa raised in Lincoln, RI. 

John left school in the tenth grade and had his father sign the papers so that he could join the Navy.  He served aboard the USS Isherwood in WWII.  He saw action in some of the worst battles of the Pacific Theater including the battle of Leyte Gulf and the invasion of Okinawa.  After leaving Okinawa, his ship was attacked by a kamikaze and more than eighty men were lost.  John received medals for his naval service in 2012. 

After the war, he worked in textiles where he met Teresa.  They settled in Lincoln, RI where they raised their family. John was active in the town, volunteering at the fire department and coaching little league.  He earned his living as a truck driver until retiring in 1989. 

He and Teresa moved to Florida where they both enjoyed the club life at Harbour Isles including beach, pool, golf, bowling, dancing and cards. John also enjoyed woodworking and racing his remote control sail boat.  They also relished their trips to Scotland to visit his extended family.

John moved to The Atria Lincoln Place in 2012 to be closer to his sons, Craig and Brian.

He is survived by his children John C. Wilson and his wife Maureen of The Villages, FL, Craig S. Wilson of Lincoln, RI, Brian W. Wilson and his wife Jeannine of North Smithfield, RI, and Dr. Jane T. Wilson of Bristol, RI, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He will be missed.  

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 pm at Lincoln Funeral Home, 1501 Lonsdale Ave., Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Tin Can Sailors Association would be appreciated.
