Frances 'Fran' L. McDermott

Frances 'Fran' L. McDermott, 81, of Cumberland, died January 1, 2016.  She was the wife of the late Edward F. McDermott, Jr.  Born in Windsor, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Linwood and Mary Alice (Copeland) Billups.

Fran was a graduate of Ivor High School Class of 1952 and earned her Registered Nurse degree from Kings Daughters Hospital-School of Nursing in 1956.  In 1970 she achieved her Licensed Nursing Administrators titled from the University of Rhode Island Extension program and from 1970 – 1999 she received various continuing education credit in related topics.

She began her nursing career as a RN Staff Nurse from 1956-1957 at Kings Daughters Hospital and from 1957-1967 at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital.  She was then employed at Grandview Nursing Home as a RN Staff Nurse 1967-1968, Director of Nurses 1968-1970, and Administrator from 1970 until her retirement in 1999.

Fran was a member of RI Long Term Nurses Association, RI Health Care Association, American Health Care Association, Cumberland Lion’s Club, and Seekonk Red Hatters.

She is survived by her sons Edward F. McDermott III of Narragansett, Kenneth McDermott and his wife Tracy of Warwick and Robert McDermott and his long time companion Laurie Siravo of Cumberland; her daughter Patricia F. Waldman and her husband Barry of Cumberland; brothers Frank Billups of North Carolina and Earl Billups of Virginia; sister Virginia Rawls of Virginia; sisters-in-law Lizzie Mae Billups of Virginia, Betty Billups of Virginia and Ginger Billups of North Carolina; 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was the sister of the late Leno Billups, J.J. Billups, James Robert Billups, William Billups and Kenneth Billups and the sister-in-law of the late Vicky Billups and Mabel Billups.

Her funeral will be held on Friday at 8:45 am from the Lincoln Funeral Home, 1501 Lonsdale Ave., Lincoln with a Service of Remembrance at 10:00 am in Four Corners Community Chapel, 200 Angell Rd., Cumberland.  Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, West Wrentham Rd., Cumberland.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 pm.
