Edward J. Sullivan, 88, formerly of Cumberland, died Thursday, October 16, 2014, at the Village at Waterman Lake. He was the beloved husband of the late Alice (Burns) Sullivan.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John and Anna (Werbicki) Sullivan.

Mr. Sullivan was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, Providence, and received a Bachelor of Arts from The College of The Holy Cross graduating also as a United States Naval Officer 1st Lieutenant, and subsequently serving in the South Pacific in WWII. He was a member of the Order of the Purple Knights honoring his more than 50 year membership in The College of the Holy Cross Alumni Association. Mr. Sullivan received his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island. He was a chief financial officer for Uniroyal before retiring in 1988.

Mr. Sullivan was a long-time parishioner of Saint Patrick Church in Cumberland, RI. He was an active member of the parish serving as President of the Holy Name Society and spending many years leading the financial efforts for the annual summer carnival held at Saint Patrick's. He was an avid sports fan following professional teams and more proudly those of his children and grandchildren. Mr. Sullivan loved his summer vacations with his family in the mountains in New Hampshire or at the beach in Little Compton, RI.

He was the beloved father of Christine Bell and her husband Thomas of Glocester, RI; Michael Sullivan and his wife Elaine of Attleboro, MA; Patrick Sullivan and his wife Debra of Boston, MA: and Kevin Sullivan and his wife Christine of Lincoln, RI. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren; Meghan Bell, Ryan Bell, Brendan Bell, Erin McCoy (Sullivan), Brian Sullivan, Cara Gilman (Sullivan), Rory Sullivan, Ashley Sullivan, James Sullivan, Bridget Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan, and 3 great-grandchildren; Claire McCoy, Graham McCoy and Molly Sullivan, and his sister Barbara Brennan of Cranston, RI. He was also the brother of the late Nancy Hyland.

His funeral will be held on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 8:45 am from the Lincoln Funeral Home, 1501 Lonsdale Ave. Lincoln, RI. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am in St. Jude Church, 301 Front St., Lincoln, RI. Burial with military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Calling hours are Sunday from 5-7pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to The Dementia/Alzheimer Foundation or The American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
