John R. Smith, 87, of Cumberland, died Thursday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Claire L. (Anderson) Smith. Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Newman and Julia (Donahue) Smith.

Mr. Smith had been employed as a staff manager for Boston Mutual Life Insurance. He was also a certified life underwriter.

He was a World War II Army veteran who served with the 1391st Army Air Force Base Unit in the Azores.

He is survived by his sons Daniel J. Smith and his wife Susan of Smithfield and Richard R. Smith of Cumberland; his daughter Elaine Lariviere and her husband Edward of Greenville; his sisters Mary Bessette of Pawtucket and Judith Meredith of Louisville, KY and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Newman Smith and Dorothy Messier.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:45 am from the Lincoln Funeral Home, 1501 Lonsdale Ave., Lincoln with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Jude Church, Front St., Lincoln. Burial with Military Honors will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Curran Road, Cumberland. Calling hours are Monday from 4:30 - 7:30 pm.
