Robert Leo Maitland, 91, of Lincoln died peacefully on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center after a two month illness. Born in Pawtucket to Robert J. Maitland and Ellen (Fogarty) Maitland, he lived in Lincoln most of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy M. (Walsh) Maitland and their two daughters, Joan E. Ayotte and Mary Ann Mayer.

After graduation from Pawtucket High School, Bob worked as a machinist for Potter & Johnson. An infantryman in WWII, he was wounded in action in New Guinea and awarded the Purple Heart. He continued duty as an aid man in a medical detachment unit. In 1945 he joined New England Telephone Company as an installer-repairman. He worked throughout the Blackstone Valley for 37 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

People were his passion. As a telephone man he met people of all stripes. He loved to drive and explore - "hit the road" he'd say - and he did into his 90th year. He enjoyed helping people get to where they wanted to go. Even strangers would call Bob for directions or a ride. He was fondly known as the "Mayor" of Denson Road. His favorite greeting was, "come early, stay late." Bob brightened anyone he came in contact with. His smile and welcoming nature, great sense of humor and compassion will be missed.

In addition to his wife and daughters, Bob leaves his loving son-in-law Carl Peter Mayer, devoted nieces and nephews Ginny Maitland, SSJ, Maureen Wilson, Frank, Bob, and Terry Maitland, and brother-in-law, Rev. Clyde J. Walsh

He was pre-deceased by his sister Angela Maitland and his brother, Francis J. Maitland.

Visiting hours are Monday 6-7 pm with a time of remembrance from 7-8 pm at the Lincoln Funeral Home, 1501 Lonsdale Avenue, Lincoln. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Judes Church, Front Street, Lincoln. Interment will be private in Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery, East Providence.
